WAYTCo’s 24Hour Play Generator is back, for its 7th year running!
Featuring WA’s freshest new talent, this hi-octane short works incubator takes stories from concept to page to stage in just 24 hours! The results are yours to see for one night only.
Under exquisite pressure, emerging writers work for 12 hours straight to create fresh-out-of-the-oven 10-minute plays. At the end of the day, six winning plays are selected. In a new twist on WAYTCo’s signature event, the winning short works are issued to six professional directors five days prior to ‘Development and Performance Day’ (D-Day). This way the directors have the chance to get their head around the new writing. On D-Day, the following Saturday, the directors will work intensively with WAYTCo-member casts for 12 hours to bring the short plays to life.
At the 24th hour, the audience arrives to enjoy six world premieres in one evening: The newest and freshest work in the country!
2023 will see an outstanding line-up of WA’s established artist talent: Alex Steffensen, Libby Klysz, Cezera Critti-Schnaars, Andrew Sutherland, Tom Heath and Alexa Taylor.
Fuelled by the determination of young blood, don’t miss WA’s next generation of artists rising to the challenge!
Performance date & time: Saturday 10 June 2023, 7:30pm
Venue: Subiaco Arts Centre, Main Stage
The excitement promises to be infectious…
WRITING DAY
“The 24-hour Play Generator was an invaluable opportunity to distill the process of writing for the stage down to its pure essence… It was just a ridiculous amount of fun from start to finish.”

For budding young writers, aged 13 to 26, 24Hour Play Generator starts with ‘Writing Day’ on Saturday June 3.
Successful applicants are supported by professional dramaturgs to write a 10-minute play for consideration by the 24Hour Play Generator judging panel. Writers have 12 hours to produce their short work, and must work from within the King Street Arts Centre, where the Company’s studio is located. Judging and selection of 6 winning plays happens at the end of day.
The prize for winning playwrights? An Honorarium and the thrill of seeing your work put to stage the following night!
Our 2022 dramaturgs: Emily McLean, Andrew Sutherland, Geordie Crawley, and WAYTCo’s very own James Berlyn. 2023 line-up TBA.
PLEASE NOTE: Whilst you don’t have to complete the WriteNOW course to participate in Writing Day, those keen to test their playwriting skills are encouraged to participate in the course, and WriteNOW participants certainly come out with an advantage. Find out more about WriteNOW here.
Writing Day date & time: Saturday 3 June 2023, 7am-7pm
