“WriteNOW gave me the confidence and knowledge to write for theatre.”
– Member
With tutelage from professional Western Australian playwrights, WriteNOW helps eager young writers develop their craft for theatre. The 7-week course empowers participants to tell Western Australian stories from a youth perspective and boosts individual skills in storytelling/writing, narrative structuring and development, and the building of plot and characters.
Past program tutors include leading industry professionals Andrew Sutherland, Hellie Turner, Sam Nerida & Zac James.
WRITING DAY
The course dovetails with the Company’s wildly popular 24Hour Play Generator by finishing a week prior to ‘Writing Day’.
On Writing Day, participants are supported by professional dramaturgs to write a 10minute play for consideration by the 24Hour Play Generator judging panel. All the writing happens in one 12-hour day and judging and selection of 6 winning plays happens at the end of the day.
The prize? An Honorarium and the thrill of seeing your work put to stage the following night!
Whilst you don’t have to complete the WriteNOW course to participate in Writing Day – anyone aged 15-26 keen to test their playwriting skills is welcome to sign up – course participants certainly come out with an advantage.
NEW IN 2022
This year we are offering 2x WriteNOW and 24Hour Play Generator combined programs, one for young people aged 15-26 starting in late April and peaking with our hi-octane June signature event held at the Subiaco Arts Centre, and the other for young people with disability kicking off in the second half of the year and culminating in an All Ability 24Hr Play Generator on 3 December 2022 (International Day of Disabled Persons).
DON’T HESITATE
Whilst the first WriteNOW has commenced, we can make room for latecomers and there’s still plenty of time to express interest in the Writing Day for our Winter 24Hour Play Generator. Don’t hesitate: Complete the form below and start writing today.

CALL OUT FOR MORE ADVANCED EMERGING PLAYWRIGHTS
This year, in July, we are offering more advanced emerging playwrights the opportunity to pitch to receive one-to-one writing and dramaturgical support to develop a one-act play, one of six to be staged as part of an entirely new play generation activity (working title: 40Hour Play Generator).
To be eligible you must be under 26 years of age and have previously written for 24hr Play Generator, or have other equivalent ‘runs on the board’ (i.e. had your work staged). The opportunity will be made available largely by invitation, however, you may express interest using the Write Now EOI form below.
